Government Licensing Statistics published

The Home Office has published the latest figures detailing the statistics relating to Alcohol and Late Night Refreshment. The figures cover the period 31^st March 2016 and show that since 31^st March 2014 the following has occurred:

• there were 210,000 premises licences, which represents a 3% increase (up 5,500) compared with 31 March 2014
• there were 14,700 club premises certificates, which represents a 5% decrease (down 700) compared with 31 March 2014
• there were 646,500 personal licences, which represents an 11% increase (up 63,000) compared with 31 March 2014
• there were 86,500 premises licences with late night refreshment, which represents a 0.1% decrease (down 100) compared with 31 March 2014
• there were 8,300 premises with 24-hour alcohol licences as at 31 March 2016, which represents a 1% increase (up 100) compared with 31 March 2014

The figures are gathered from Local Authority’s that completed a statistical return. This does not record the number of public houses, or nightclubs or hotels etc. The user guide which accompanies the report states:

“ information is collected on premises licences/club premises certificates that authorise on-sales of alcohol only, authorise off-sales of alcohol only, and authorise both on-sales and off-sales of alcohol. In relation to premises/club premises that are permitted to sell alcohol, on-sales refers to those which can sell/supply alcohol for consumption on the premises and off-sales refers to those which can sell/supply alcohol for consumption off the premises”

Further what the figures cannot do is confirm how many of the licences and certificates in force are active or inactive, or utilised for some of their authorised licensable activities but not others
